On Silence & Solitude...

David and I took today off. He is riding his mare with our teacher/trainer, Dave Seay over at MacCarthy Farm. For me, a day off means puttering. I cleaned the house, took care of some duties that simply must happen each day for this business to operate, napped and now I am enjoying....silence.

Max is on the sofa, occasionally opening one eye to make sure I'm not fixin' to head somewhere on the ATV without him. Bobbie is belly up on the other end of the sofa, all 4 legs in the air, snoring. Scrappy-Sack-O-Taters is in front of the doggie toy box, wondering what time we're going to eat. Missy has dibs on the floor by the French Doors and Emma is manning the landing to the loft. Loser...er...Bruiser is downstairs, likely curled up in a pile of laundry that was clean but will now need to be washed again.

When I was single and a young assistant professor at Georgia Southern, I would run myself into the ground, and then come here to regain my perspective and my sanity. When we moved here, well, let's just say this job requires a tremendous amount of hands on time. The views and the scenery never fail to take my breath away, but it occurs to me how little time I get in total and complete silence. It isn't just something I like; it is something I require.

For me, it is only in true silence that you can contemplate your life, evaluate what is working, and just listen to your heart. It is restorative. As I look out the windows at the hummingbirds, hear the faint tinkling of the windchimes and watch the tree limbs moving slightly in the breeze, I realize I don't need stuff to satisfy me. I do need silence, solitude and the chance to connect with my spirit.

Here's hoping you will carve out some quiet time for yourself each day.

Rise & Shine

Up with the sun this morning - having iced coffee and watching the most gorgeous sunrise. 59 degrees out there, and crisp! Loser...er...I mean Bruiser..the ChiWeenie is in my lap (daschund/chihuahua) keeping my feet warm - at least he is good for something besides barking and biting the Freeman Gas man. A couple more cups of iced coffee, the AJC crossword puzzle to fire up the ole neurons and I'll be on my way. Only a few cabins open for this weekend and Fridays are last minute special days, so we'll be hopping all day.

This weekend...

....is the last for the Georgia Mountain Fair in Hiawassee, and Harry Potter is at the Drive In!!! We're between a new and half moon, so the star gazing is amazing! Blackberries are ripe, weather is divine. Time to get away from it all and enjoy Blue Ridge, Ga!

September in July!

That's what it feels like with the stunning weather that continues to hang around the area. No one is complaining and I had to actually put a sweatshirt on this morning when I went out on the mountain at 8:00 a.m. and it was 54 degrees.

Bobbi found a skunk today. Bad Bobbers. I think it must have been previously deceased and she just rolled in it, as she's not as bad as she could be. She's been staying at various cabins with guests and only coming home when she can't find a better deal elsewhere. Kind of makes you feel a bit used, eh?

After a brutally busy weekend, David has taken the day to go ride Kachina. I'm hoping he's having a great time!

We're on Twitter now - it is far easier for me to do "last minute discounts" via Twitter than the blog, so feel free to follow us at http://twitter.com/AboveRestCabins.

Wherever you are, count & enjoy your blessings!

Whoa!

It's 56 (!!!) degrees here at 6:30 this morning! Niiiiiiice. After some serious humidity we're back to the wonderful weather everyone comes here to enjoy. I've been on cabin maintenance this week but got one glorious ride in on my spectacular mare, Faith Elizabeth. She certainly has my heart. David's riding Kachina on trail rides now and it's going pretty well.

Lots of guests to prepare for and welcome today. Come on up and enjoy My Mountain and all that Blue Ridge/North Georgia have to offer!!

Building an Ark....

We're getting a gully washer in the mountains as a huge storm has just rolled in. The rain is always welcome, so no complaints here! Weather is supposed to clear in time for weekend fun in the sun, humidity is low, and all is lush & gorgeous!

Come on up!
